Prosecute BP for Mass Dolphin Deaths

Sixty-seven bottlenose dolphins have washed up on the Gulf of Mexico beaches over the past few weeks. More than half, 35, are babies. That is 10 times the normal rate.

This is the first calving season since the Gulf Oil Spill for the estimated 2,000-5,000 dolphins in the region. During this time period normally just one or two dead baby dolphins are found.

Dolphins have an 11- or 12-month gestation period. These dead baby dolphins were conceived just before the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig leased by BP blew up April 20, triggering a massive oil spill. "So, these animals were undergoing development during the height of the oil spill," says Teri Rowles, the top marine mammal scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

    http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-the-dolphin-slaughter-in-taiji-japan

    OVERVIEW

Around the world, September signals the start of school...yellow school buses, children with new sneakers, lunch boxes and sharpened pencils...

In the small coastal town of Taiji, Japan, September signals the start of something sinister... The annual slaughter of thousands of dolphins.

For the first time ever, in 2010 -2011, Cove Guardian Activists from Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Save Japan Dolphins were in Taiji every single day of the dolphin slaughter, which ran from September to March...yet the tragedy continues...

The activists witnessed day after day, week after week, month after month, as pods of dolphins were hunted and driven into the Cove by fishermen using high-tech gear. Terrified and exhausted, the dolphins were systematically and brutally bludgeoned to death. Dolphin calves swam in their mothers' blood. By the end of the 2010-2011 "drive hunt" season, 850 dolphins were killed in the Cove. Another 171 were sold into captivity after witnessing the murder of their families.

Had they attempted to intervene, the Cove Guardians would have faced jail or deportation, neither of which would have benefitted the cause of raising awareness about the Taiji dolphin slaughter. Instead they harnessed the power of social media and reported the devastation in the Cove to activists all over the world in real time. In turn, these activists made thousands of calls, sent thousands of emails and faxes, and organized protests at Japanese Embassies across the world.

The presence of the Cove Guardians was felt - our voices were heard. The brutal killers of the Taiji Fisheries Union struggled to conceal their savagery behind blue tarps, but they were not successful. The world bore witness to the senseless killing of some of natures most beautiful and intelligent creatures.

Working with the Cove Guardians over a five day period in December, the facebook community Save Misty The Dolphin was able to help secure better captive conditions for a very sick dolphin named Misty, who had been left to die in a backyard pool. Suffering from a lung infection, Misty floated listlessly in blackened water until a non-stop calling campaign forced his captors at Dolphin Base Resort to move the animal to a clean pool and provide better veterinary care for him.

THE KILLING RESUMES ON SEPTEMBER 1st!

    http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-airlines-stop-transporting-nonhuman-primates-for-research

    OVERVIEW

Please support the BUAV's campaign to stop airlines transporting nonhuman primates for the research industry.

Airlines play a key role in the international trade in primates for research by transporting monkeys for laboratories around the world. Cruelty and suffering are an intrinsic part of the trade. Some monkeys are taken from the wild; others are the offspring of wild-caught individuals forced into captivity for a lifetime of breeding. All are torn from their family groups, packed into small, wooden crates and shipped as cargo, usually on extremely long journeys. Primates are highly sensitive animals, so this treatment and the conditions they endure are extremely stressful for them. Some become ill and even die in transit. Delays, poor ventilation, noise and temperature fluctuations can add to their misery.

Only a small number of passenger airlines continue to be involved in this ugly business, including Air France, China Eastern, China Southern, Air Canada and Vietnam Airlines.

I thought I'd share with You this sad poem.

The Last Breath - Alexandra Dolbenev
My owner loved me right to death,
He said he would until my last breath,
So why am I driven far away?
Did I do something wrong? Why can’t I stay,
The truck is crowded with many of me,
They don’t look too happy, I thought we were free?
I can smell the stench of fatality,
The men say, “But hey, this is reality,”
What are they doing, where are we going?
Will there be trees and winds a blowing?
The horses ears are back in fright,
They try to escape, a horrid sight,
Their hoofs get caught inside the wall,
Their legs break off, their blood will fall,
Please Oh what is going on?
    Will I reach another dawn?
The truck drives up with many dead,
    Where they await,
To be shocked in the head,
    HELP! HELP! Doesn’t anybody care,
I thought somebody loved me, they would shoo away the scare!
    AHHH…they shocked me,
I can’t move or even see,
The men stare cruelly into my eyes,
    “It won’t hurt,”
    These are all lies,
A rope pulls me upside down,
In these chains I am bound,
Why do they do this, what have I done wrong?
Why can’t I live, any long?
    My last breath,
    Before my death,
I remember the good times in the pasture,
This all happened, no more then last year,
She said she loved me, no matter how old,
I can never believe what I was told,
“You’ll soon be free, there is no pain,”
They don’t know it, they can’t feel it, they’re insane,
    Want me for food?
    Will I taste good?
I hope you choke on my meat,
And feel the pain of my last heart beat,
Why do they eat us, why not themselves?
I bet you they know that we’re going through hell,
So next time you eat us or kill us, look at the skies,
Our families are lost, because of the lies,
Can’t you see them or feel their cries?
How does it feel to be lost from your dears,
Does it bring memories does it bring tears?
The life of a horse, is worthwhile the life,
To finish it up oh why is there strife?
Don’t let it happen, and I’ll tell you how,
Sign a petition and help us NOW!

I am saddened by the fact that so many horses from Poland end up like that. We do not eat horse meat in Poland so our horsed are exported abroad and the whole "journey" is so cruel and painful.

    http://www.ptroa.co.il/petition/

Tens of millions of animals are slaughtered and butchered in China each year. Animal fur is in high demand, and the Chinese deliver. What does not get exported outside of China usually ends up on a dinner plate. The sad fact is that the animals suffer horrendous torture. They are captured on the streets, and packed by the dozens into small cages, without ability to move. They are then tossed like inanimate objects from the trucks, onto the ground, hitting each other and the steel cages. These cages are later stacked, and the real nightmare begins. The animal is brutally pulled out of the cage, and tied to prevent resistance. It is lightly stunned by a blow on the head, but still alive. If the animal is not heavy, the worker holds it by its hind legs, waves it in the air and then bashes its head against the ground. Once the animal is subdued, a new and incomprehensible stage in this ongoing nightmare begins. The worker cuts a tiny incision in the animal's rear, and then methodically peels away the skin. This skinning process takes about a minute, during which the worker actively keeps the animal alive, as it is believed that it is easier to skin the animal while it is still warm and blood flows through its veins. The nightmare does not end here. The final stage in this unbelievable horror is when the animal is tossed aside, and slowly, amidst a heap of its dying friends, it perishes as it is no longer able to withstand the pain. In other cases, when the animal's fur is not needed (mostly with cats), the animals are put in a sack, and are then cooked alive in a barrel of boiling water.
This process is extremely hard to digest, but we believe it is not propelled by cruelty, but rather by ignorance and lack of awareness to animal needs. The workers do not think to kill the animal before they begin, and are not aware of the animal's suffering. Our commitment is to provide enlightenment. It is our moral obligation to these animals. If we shut our eyes this will not go away!

Ban BEAR FARMS IN KOREA - Save Bears!

Post  burgundia on Wed Sep 07, 2011 2:44 pm

    http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-bears-in-korea.html

There are more than 1600 bears in captivity (1400 of them are Asian Moon Bears- Moon Bears, with distinctive 'V' mark on their chest) in over 110 bear farms in Korea.

The Korean government is responsible for this as they started importing bears from North America and Japan for breeding and export in early 1980's.

Visits to 10 bear farms in 2004 by GreenKorea group, confirmed hygiene standards and the conditions of bears were both extremely poor.

Most of the bears were in small dog cages, fed with pig's food for cost cutting measure by bear farmers. All bears showed signs of abnormal behaviour.

There are no regulations providing for any specific methods of slaughter, and there is a widespread belief that the bears are killed inhumanely.

Just imagine many bears waiting to be slaughtered for their gall bladder, feet and meat, crowded into small and filthy cages on daily basis.

Please sign this petiton to stop this horrible crime. We are aiming for 20,000 signatures to be the voice of all the farmed bears in the world.

    http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/stop-the-cat-cutters/

When I received it I felt sick for the whole day. In the video there are%uFFFD Chinese kids filming each other while tying cats to trees, and torturing them to death, through horrible unspeakable sufferance that can be read in the eyes of the victims. The animals are slowly skinned alive.%uFFFD At the beginning of the video a woman is seen in the background rushing past the scene with her child, for some reason ignoring the situation.

I believe this is the bottom of the pit, and something MUST be done about it. There must be legal prosecution against these crimes. Let's ask the government of China to take action against these brutalities. Animal protection laws need to be created, and individuals who do such hideous crimes need to be punished.
