MOVING THE FORUM TO IT'S OWN WEBSITE IN MAY

Post  Carol on Sun Apr 18, 2010 8:24 pm

As most of you have likely noticed, Mercuriel has been experimenting with what this host can do on the forum and been running into a variety of restrictions. The wall of functionality won’t allow him to get into the back door to add on additional member features. If we want to go further, in terms of forum functionality, we have to move over to our own website which he already has in place. We are hoping to make this transition by the first week of May and this time we will NOT have to move our data base thread by thread.

The Mists' website will provide daily backup, many themes to choose from, chat room which is expanded in functionality, media storage and archival ~ greater functionality with graphical and technical twists available to work with, as well as greater security. We will also be able to steam movies as we can have a link-library that is independent of other media streaming services.

So please be patient as we continue to upgrade Mists. You can relax for the next couple of weeks as there will be no more changes here other then to try out different banners and will be given plenty of notice when we are ready to make the transition.

    Mahalo Nui loa,

    Carol and Mercuriel

MOVING THE FORUM TO ITS OWN WEBSITE IN MAY

Post  truth and integrity on Sun Apr 18, 2010 8:53 pm

I just have been thinking that there were many changes regarding to our forum. I am talking about challenges to navigate in the Misfits1 then to learn again to do here. Now, I have a prospect to put myself in a fire again. Today I feel that I just don’t have energy to it and I don’t want to have more transitions and more computer challenges.

In fact this would require NOTHING of You All - Not even Reg'ing if I can help It...

That'd all be ported over and the URL Address would be the same too...

    Ancient One

At any rate - nothing is in stone YET. Its just an Option and Its up to You Guys and Gals. Think it over for a few days or so and then repost back in here with what Y'all as a Community think of this and We'll move from there...

    Thubs Up

    Mercuriel,
There is another aspect that we need to consider. We are loosing people rather then building a strong community. There are more people in the Invision Plus then here. Perhaps, some of them don’t know about our transition while others maybe discouraged by constant movement. I came here hoping to build a strong forum of likeminded people.
I see next transition to weaken us. This is not what I hoped for. Others maybe happy about another change.

Well - then - Nothing occurrs and We stay here. I mean what do You suggest ? Go back to the crap Forum at Invision ?

    Blink

You've been here all along for this discussion and if not - You've missed alot...

Suggest something. Help make the Community You say You would like to see. Theres tonnes of room for criticism. Simply put - Give some suggestions on what You'd like to see.

Sorry - I don't know what else to say. We either stay with this as the Invision Forums are unrecoverable - Or - We do something else. Again - Its up to You Guys and Gals. You have the Choice - No one else.

T&I, the problem when we left Invision is that the email didn't reach every one and we were up at about 200 members after 2 weeks. We've only been here one week and have over 100 members now registered. I was also told to remove the link to here from the admin/mods at Avalon or be banned so it isn't so easy for those who didn't get the PM to link over here without some help. Meaning someone(s) have to contact their friends and give them the new link. I think being up at over 50 percent in just a week is pretty good because the others are coming.. just as they did before.

I've also waited sending out the link to my personal contacts (which is extensive) until the forum was more settled. I think we will continue to see more members join and the community become more solid because many of us already know each other from other places. Folks at Avalon have also had difficulty because their site has been down so much.. and the link left on Avalon 1 is no longer any good either. So if you want to help build the community you need to send this link to those you'd like to be here and personally invite them.

Now let's drop down to the techy issues. The whole techy learning curve has been a nightmare of late due to so many different forums. PA1 evolving into PA2 which I really don't like the site.. to Kerry's forum Project Light Workers... to Mists, needing to move due to the server problem. Now that we own our website name moving to our own website would be easy because the link remains the same. That didn't happen with this last move so it was much more difficult for us for a number of reasons. Yet, many folks settled in right away and are posting. When I was at Avalon when it went to paid subscribtion our poster number went way down into the teens and that was with over a 6,000 membership base. Then it moved up into the 20s for a few months and slowly up into the 30s and low 40s. In just a couple of weeks we were up into the 20s which is very good for a new site. Now it has dropped down and flexuates because people are popping in but not hanging out for long periods of time. If you look at the list at the bottom we have a lot of traffic already.. people are also busy and outside if the weather permits because it is Spring time... yet we still have a lot of interest and our membership spans the globe. If you follow the map you will see people pop in from all over. So the important thing is not to get discourage ~ post what interests you and invite your friends.

We all know folks don't like change. That's understandable.. only how this next step happens ~we don't have to do anything other then log in.

With our own website, this forum will only become more and more attractive because of what we can offer the members. Meanwhile we all get a break.. for a few weeks and the membership will continue to build. They won't be lost this time because everyone gets carried over. cheers

    Mercuriel,

I appreciate your commitment and your work to build a better functioning forum.
I agree 100% with you that we had to move here from Invision Plus. However, now I think that we need to focus on bringing all people from Invision and rebuilding its strengths. This is well documented and researched that transition always weakens community. We are week at this point. I am more concerned about people then having well functioning forum with many sophisticated feature that I will not use it anyway due to my ignorance. It is very important for me to have a strong forum. I am not trying to convince you not to do it. I express my opinion and I am very clear what I need. Others may want otherwise and they will move on with enthusiasm. I don’t.

T&I... these are the members who were here in the last 12 hours. 70 people plus. Our community is building and more are joining every day. Even the ones who left Avalon before it split are becoming members here. What we have to offer is special... similar to the movie "Field of Dreams"... flower

Just look... these are our friends who have already found their way here in just 7 days. The others will continue to come, particularly after I inform them I shall not be posting at AV2 because I was threatened being banned just for posting our link. And I will also be deleting the info in my posts at Invision, closing my own threads and leaving our link there instead. If they want to read what we have already posted they will be redirected to here. And we have much, much more to share.

I hardly ever 'lose' something, unless I want to.
But than again, I'm a Virgo, so it's second nature to me... Big Grin 2

If there's a better server & the 'Tech-Mods' find it worth the hassle to make a change, who am I to say 'No'?
    Because we might lose 'members'?
    What a lame excuse!

I only know one forum - QuestionExclamation! - which lost quite a lot of members, (6000-something), but I wonder more & more if those numbers were perhaps pimped a bit by their owner(s)/mods. )Who, by the way, are now being worshipped as 'Gods' by those who were invited to do so. Lmfao

The constant changes are challenging, and can be unsettling.

But, if it makes for a more functional, reliable forum, I say go for it!

Thank you to those who make this forum possible!

Better get used to change guys and gals, there is going to be plenty more of it.

MOVING THE FORUM TO ITS OWN WEBSITE IN MAY

Post  truth and integrity on Sun Apr 18, 2010 11:40 pm

    Carol,

I don’t share your opinion. I have noticed that energy in this forum is low recently. I see it as a part of transition. The excitement has just disappeared. We need more people. Secondly, since March I am facing constant change and I am wasting my energy. Changes in Avalon were contagious and contaminated our perception what really matters. Rather then doing my research I am in a constant war with computer. Even now I can’t post my art because of changes. What is more important chicken or egg ?. I read that both Nebula and Trancoso are enthusiastic about change. Well, they did take into consideration that not everybody is sophisticated in computer.
