Not so long ago, excitement rose to a fevered pitch with the announcement of a budget Tesla car slated to hit the streets in 2017. The cars are gorgeous, seemingly easy on the environment and in a price range the average Joe can afford. But over the last few years, there have been disgruntled murmurings about how electric vehicles aren’t that environmentally sound. Some feel they can actually be worse for the planet than combustion engines, since they often rely on conventional electricity sources to recharge. So while the idea is appealing in theory, the reality isn’t so rosy when we look at their actual impact. The same can be said for other technologies like hydrogen fuel cell and hybrid cars.
There is one advancement, however, that could be a genuine game changer in the realm of eco-friendly cars: saltwater powered vehicles.

    The Trouble with Electric Vehicles

On face value, the latest developments in electric-powered cars appear to be promising. Manufacturers boast that the cars emit zero emissions, which is a major selling point considering the dreadful state of our air quality and environment. But critics say electric vehicles simply “extend the tailpipe” since the electricity to charge the battery needs to come from somewhere, many times from fossil fuels like coal-burning plants, natural gas (think fracking) or diesel generators. If you’re not a fan of nuclear power, be warned, it most likely plays a role in powering your electric car too. Currently the national grid in the United States is roughly 40 percent coal, 25 percent natural gas, 20 percent nuclear power and around 10 percent renewable sources. And burning coal isn’t simply spewing CO2 into the atmosphere, but also a range of noxious gasses like nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide — in levels far greater than a gasoline engine.
Of course there are other power sources — like wind, solar and hydro. Keep in mind that solar isn’t all that clean because the manufacturing process releases greenhouse gases like sulfur hexafluoride, which has 23,000 times as much global warming potential as CO2. Moreover, it takes fossil fuels to extract the raw materials to make solar cells and wind turbines — including manufacturing, assembly and maintenance. Hydro has come under fire in recent years because of its impact on local ecosystems.
And then there’s the actual manufacturing of an electric car, which involves using specialty materials and the mining of rare- earth metals for the magnets in the motors, which are costly to extract and difficult to come by. For example, at a Jiangxi, China rare-earth mine, workers dig eight foot holes and pour ammonium sulfate to dissolve the clay. The muddy mixture is then hauled out and passed through numerous acid baths — whatever remains is dried in a kiln, which leaves behind the rare-earth metals. Only 0.2 percent of what’s pulled out is usable, the other 99.8 percent is now contaminated with toxins and unloaded back into the environment.
“Part of the impact arises from manufacturing. Because battery packs are heavy (the battery accounts for more than a third of the weight of the Tesla Roadster, for example), manufacturers work to lighten the rest of the vehicle. As a result, electric car components contain many lightweight materials that are energy intensive to produce and process—carbon composites and aluminum in particular. Electric motors and batteries add to the energy of electric-car manufacture.” [source]

What’s more, the batteries will degrade overtime — it’s estimated you lose about 40% of the battery life within 16 years for a Tesla in the best case scenario. Unfortunately, we don’t have a cost-effective recycling program in place at the moment. And Tesla batteries are big — weighing in at a half a ton. But if you’re willing to pay the freight back to the Tesla factory, they will recycle all battery packs returned to them. For lower end electric vehicles, battery packs will typically last ten years with 60-70 percent battery life at that point. For those models that are not liquid cooled (Nissan Leaf is one), living in a hot climate can degrade the battery sooner — in under five years.
But what if there were a better way to fuel our cars, one that doesn’t rely on the power grid or having to replace batteries after a decade of use? The folks at nanoFlowcell have stepped up to the plate and developed the world’s first car to run off saltwater.

An Eco-Friendly Sports Car with Zip

Imagine filling up at the pump not with polluting gasoline, but a special type of non-toxic saltwater. And instead of weak horsepower and driving range, the car can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds — with a top speed of 236 mph — and drive for up to 373 miles between fuelings. Seem too good to be true? Not so in Europe, where the Quant e-Sportlimosine has gone from prototype to reality, soon to be seen on roads in Germany.
    How does it work?
The tank is filled with ionic fluid, which is inexpensive to manufacture, non-toxic, non-flammable and has an unlimited shelf life. The ionic fuel pumps are similar to a standard gasoline pumps, with one important difference — two liquids (one positively charged and one negatively charged) are pumped simultaneously into two separate tanks within the vehicle.
Both liquids contain metallic salts that, when combined, create an electrochemical reaction and sent to a fuel cell. Electricity is created and stored in super capacitors and then sent to the four electric motors.
Granted, the manufacturing of the vehicle is energy and material intensive. But it’s a major improvement over electric cars simply because, once made, it doesn’t rely on the power grid in any way, shape or form — and the car is completely non-polluting to run. The developers of the Quant e-Sportlimosine are optimistic.
“This is only the beginning of our journey of discovery. Now that the automobile has been approved for use on public roads in Germany and Europe, we can enter into detailed planning with our partners, adding an exciting new chapter to the future of electro-mobility.” [source]

The company hopes to expand the technology into powering aircraft, homes, railways and freight transport.

Not bad... but I'll really be impressed the day they stop making everything for profit and instead make everything free to the world.

    Karma Aims to Challenge Tesla
    With $115,000 Solar-Boosted Hybrid

    Revero

    • Luxury sedan with 50 miles of electric range revealed online

    • Executive sees Maserati, Aston Martin as competing brands

Karma Automotive LLC, the Chinese-owned carmaker once known as Fisker Automotive, has taken another step in its resurrection with the online reveal of its plug-in hybrid sedan that seeks to compete with Tesla’s Model S electric car.

The rebooted automaker has revealed the all-new Revero, which will cost more than the $115,000 sticker price on the original Fisker Karma when deliveries begin no later than next year’s first quarter. The car will be able to go about 50 miles (80 kilometers) in pure electric drive before a gasoline engine kicks in, said Chief Revenue Officer Jim Taylor. It also has a solar panel on the roof that can charge the battery, he said.

Karma’s plan is to sell an exclusive sports sedan to people who currently buy the Tesla Model S and other expensive sporty cars. Under Wanxiang Group Corp. and its chairman Lu Guanqiu, Karma is one of several Chinese-backed plug-in car companies that are targeting the U.S. market with electric cars that will take on Tesla Motors Inc.

“We think we’re in Tesla’s court,” Taylor said in a telephone interview. “If it was just about style, we would only go head to head with Aston Martin and Maserati. But these buyers are also interested in the technology.”

    Solar Role

Karma is among the first to use solar panels to charge a production car’s high-voltage battery that powers the motor. The predecessor company’s original car, called the Fisker Karma, used a solar panel to charge the 12-volt battery that powers lights and other accessories and Toyota Motor Corp. has used solar power in the Prius to run the ventilation system. Toyota’s new Prius Prime plug-in, going on sale this year, will have an optional solar panel to charge the battery for buyers in Europe.

Solar power is a big part of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s vision. He has proposed merging Tesla with SolarCity Corp., in which he holds a 22 percent stake. Musk wants his buyers to be able to buy his cars and then charge them with solar power at home. Several of Tesla’s fast-charging stations are also solar-powered.

A decade ago the inventors of water powered cars got poisoned and their technology suppressed.
And now suddenly we are beginning to see these water cars going mainstream. Seems like good news.

    But what changed ?
Ask yourself " Who owns the Earth's water ?

    Arrow http://www.pauldonahue.net/who_owns_earths_water.html

Could there be a link ? There would be huge profits to be made in incorporated water world if these types of cars would become the norm.
With all the hype on Global Warming that is taking place since years now people will demand these cars . The market is ripe for them.

    Love Always

The world is currently ruled with money.  It will ALWAYS be about power over others, greed, and profit (in that order) until we change that.

The ones in power never worry about making profit.  That's a given.  They control the money and take what they want.

I agree , however nature has a way of balancing things , eventually greed will eat its self , power will become passe , Greed in this isntance or Ego Power is actually going to serve us better than we think.

Technology filtering down to companies with ambitions to be dominant will superceed old school control systems , the electric market will at first be controlled and monatised however it wont be long before its hacked and served up as the freedoom for the old world order. So edify these people , support them , once energy is free that leg will be gone from the power grid .. 2022 around july ... ( at this point .. maybe sooner )

Once energy systems are made free everything else will follow ... the powers lose grip ... the people become confident ... the powershift to us will be swif.

Do not wonder if it will happen ... Know it will and see it as already done :0) LET IT BE

I don't like the idea of edifying and supporting these a-holes...  However, hacked and served up? That's much better.  Undermining them, yes, I'll go with that.  I don't ever want anyone to be unclear as to where I stand on these issues.

Sounds good, Nanu... but how long is 'it won't be long' (2022??)? Yes, I do think it will happen... is starting to happen.  I have NOT got the patience. Argh

In the meantime, we still have environmental destruction, global chaos, and people everywhere continue to suffer needlessly.

I'm glad they 'screwed up' and gave us the internet. sunny   Frick... maybe we gave it to ourselves.  Hmmm  We're conditioned to give all the credit to the a-holes for anything good that happens in order to further disempower us.

One does need to stay positive through all this.  Yes, suffering has so much to do with choice...

Yes, of course I'm talking about car manufacturers -- more specifically, I'm talking about those behind the manufacture of cars in general.  They aren't necessarily the ones 'making a change'... They are trying their best to keep up, capitalize on and control societal trends that may or may not be entirely orchestrated by them.  This is always about maintaining power over the masses and turning everything to their advantage.
