    Music That Inspires Me

Post  Guest on Sat Jul 01, 2017 4:05 pm

Well. I just joined this forum, so I minus well jump in and make a thread.

I thought I'd start with what music inspired me over the years and still do. When I was a wee lad, my mother got me a transistor radio and I started to listen to the local radio stations. I really dig the music that was playing, but had no clue who the bands were. One day, our school took to us on a field trip to the symphony. And while the other kids were bored as snot, I heard something more dynamic and inspiring than Rock or Pop. Classical music.

A few years later, I discovered my passion in cinema, especially in the sci-fi/fantasy/horror genre. And with that, they had their soundtracks. Star Wars was the first that blew me away. I couldn't imagine using a 'classical type' music in a Space Fantasy film. It gave the whole experience a richness to it. By the time I was a teenager, I was listening to John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Ennio Morricone, Maurice Jarre and Vangelis, while the other kids were listening to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Police, April Wine, David Bowie and the like. Don't get me wrong, I did tuned in that music as well and some were just as inspiring as the composers. ELO, Supertramp, Styx and Tears For Fears to name a few.

By the end of the 80's, I was finding that Rock/Pop music, as well as Soundtracks, was losing something. There was no 'spark' or 'soul' to it anymore. Until, I saw a music video of Irish singer singing something I've never heard before which sparked my interest again. The singer was Enya and I've been following her ever since.

Here are some of my favourite tracks thru-out the years. Most are from films, but I do have some classical. I hope you enjoy them.

Star Wars Episode IV - Ben Kenobi's Death/TIE Fighter Attack

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - The Visitors/Bye/End Titles

Raiders of the Lost Ark - The Raiders March

Vangelis is definitely dreamy. I really dig it. Hey, Jean-Michel Jarre rang a bell and sure enough he had a track in the 1981 film, Gallipoli directed by Peter Weir. The track was somewhat of out place, for being a period piece, but it works for me.

    Here's a listen.

    Gallipoli - Final Race

Have you heard of Tangerine Dream? They did the soundtrack for the 1987 horror film, Near Dark.

Near Dark - She's My Sister
